Service

I view service as equally important as teaching and research for scholars.  I've given my time and expertise at the departmental, college, university, and professional level, as well as to community causes. 

Some selected service activities include:

• coordinator for the Frontiers of New Media Symposium, September 2007
• member of the American Cancer Society's Hope Gala committee, 2008, 2009
• past board member for the Utah Pride Center
• graduate student liaison for the Mass Communication & Society Division of AEJMC
• member of the Communication Graduate Student Advisory Council and past co-president of the Communication Graduate Student Association
• manuscript review for RMCR, First Monday, Allyn & Bacon, and Cengage Learning
• manuscript reviewer for the AoIR, NCA, and WSCA conferences
• founder of the annual Trinity University/Jackson-Keller Elementary Field Day
• senior counselor at Texas Boys State

Also, I see popular press venues and media commentary as important vehicles for academics to relate research to the public and to speak out against injustice.  Some moments of media presence include:

• contributor to Jeff Howe's blog about crowdsourcing
• guest on an episode about crowdsourcing for Connecticut Public Radio's Where We Live
• interviewed in an article on social media for Utah CEO Magazine
• commentator on Home is Where the Heart is, an educational video about transgender issues
• several letters to the editor of local newspapers addressing free speech and peace issues
