About Me

I am a Ph.D. candidate and graduate teaching fellow in the Department of Communication at the University of Utah.  Additionally, I am an associate graduate researcher for Ron Yaros' Lab for Communicating Complexity with Multimedia at the University of Maryland-College Park.  My dissertation focuses on the potential for the crowdsourcing model to move beyond the for-profit sector and to be put into use for government and non-profit problem solving.  Among the first to publish research on crowdsourcing, my work has appeared in Convergence, First Monday, Planning Theory, and Flow.  I am advised by Joy Pierce (chair), Karim R. Lakhani, Timothy Larson, Thomas W. Sanchez, and Cassandra Van Buren.

I am originally from Texas, but I've lived in Salt Lake City since 2004, when I started graduate school.  I earned my B.A. from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, with majors in communication and religion.  In 2006, I earned my M.S. in communication at the University of Utah, with an emphasis in media criticism and cultural studies.

I also work part-time as a user experience designer for Burton Group's Product Development and IT team in Midvale, Utah, and I pick up the occasional public relations or Web design contract.  When I'm not working, I enjoy hanging out and traveling with my wife, Annie, going to the zoo, and going to Bees games.
